FAMILY PRACTICE
ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
During the Family Medicine portion of the program, students developed a strong understanding of the importance of primary care and building long-term relationships with patients of all ages. They learned how family medicine physicians provide care for a wide range of health concerns, from routine checkups and preventive care to ongoing management of medical conditions. Students also gained insight into how family medicine differs from other specialties by observing the importance of continuity of care and understanding a patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and family background over time. Through their experience with Dr. Matthew Teters, students also learned that effective healthcare extends beyond medical knowledge and requires compassion, kindness, and genuine connection with patients. This experience highlighted the importance of treating each patient as a whole person and building trust through consistent, patient-centered care.
